Major Barbara

Der Film basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Theaterstück von G.B. Shaw aus dem Jahr 1905: Ein millionenschwerer Rüstungsfabrikant fragt nicht danach, wem er seine Waffen verkauft, denn es geht ihm nur um das Geld, und dazu bekennt er sich auch offen. Seine Familie hat sich aus moralischen Gründen von ihm distanziert. Daraus entspinnt sich ein Konflikt zwischen ihm und seiner Tochter, die bei der Heilsarmee arbeitet und hier die sozialen Widersprüche drastisch erlebt. Der weltberühmte Dramatiker Shaw arbeitet am Drehbuch mit und spricht in dem Film einen eigens dafür verfassten Prolog.

Carl Mayer hatte 1937 ein eigenständiges Drehbuch, "East End and the Salvation Army" geschrieben, in der es um die Liebe eines Heilsarmeemädchens zu einem verheirateten Taugenichts geht. Das Mayersche Drehbuch wurde jedoch nicht realisiert und fand auch in MAJOR BARBARA keine Verwendung.
