Georgia kurz nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg: eine Konservenfabrik will einen großes Stück noch nicht kultiviertes Land aufkaufen, wozu die Großgrundbesitzer Henry (Michael Caine) und Julie Ann Warren (Jane Fonda) noch zwei Parzellen erwerben müssen, die bereits verkauft sind. Dort leben auf dem einen Henry Cousin Rad McDowell (John Philipp Law) und seine Frau Lou (Faye Dunaway) mit ihren Kindern und der Farbige Reeve Scott (Robert Hooks) mit seiner Mutter Rose auf dem anderen.
