Night Waltz

USA, 1999

Film

gedreht hatte. Es sind poetische und experimentelle Bilder: Alltagsszenen
aus Paris, New York und Mexiko - Bilder aus Städten, in denen Paul Bowles
gelebt hat.
Berlinale 2000

When Paul Bowles died last year, the author of "The Sheltering Sky" was celebrated
as a great writer and non-conformist. However, hardly a mention
was made in the obituaries of the fact that Bowles had also made a name
for himself as a composer. In the thirties and forties Bowles, who was a pupil
of Aaron Copland, was a promising newcomer both on the New York art
scene and in the music world. Bowles wrote pieces for concertante performances,
for opera, ballet, the theatre as well as films. He worked with people like Orson Welles, Tennessee Williams, Leonard Bernstein and the dancer
Merce Cunningham.

In extracts from interviews recorded in Morocco,
Bowles looks back on these years and reveals an approach to music which
may be considered somewhat conventional for this day and age: "why
should anybody want to listen to music that isn't pleasing to the ear?".
Bowles compositions are 'visualised' by such renowned cinematographers
as Nathaniel Dorsky and David John Golia, but also by Rudy Burckhardt, who
made a film with Bowles in the thirties. The images are both poetic and
experimental and include scenes of everyday life in Paris, New York and
Mexico - all places where Paul Bowles lived.
