Ein Kaufmann verliert seine Waren. Die Freier seiner drei Töchter verlassen das gastfreundliche Haus. Mit Wünschen der Töchter erreicht er ein Schloss, wo er eine Rose bricht. Der Schlossherr, in ein Untier verwandelt, will ihn verschonen, wenn er eine Tochter freiwillig hergibt. Julia, die Jüngste, erkennt die Trauer des Vaters, geht ins Schloss, führt mit dem Untier trauliche Gespräche. Als Julie ihn in voller Gestalt sieht, ist er dem Tod geweiht. Julie kehrt zum Vater zurück. In der Todesstunde des Untiers ist sie an seiner Seite: Es wird als Prinz wieder geboren.
